Angry residents have now gathered a petition in the battle to prevent a new private school on the picturesque Bablake playing fields site off Duncroft Avenue in Coundon. It emerged last month that Bablake School is planning to move its junior school to Coundon and residents are worried that the site cannot cope with 400 more cars descending on the area during the school run. Leading the campaign against the plan is Duncroft Avenue resident Mrs Harrison who has gathered a petition bearing 200 Signatures.

Councillors are also alarmed by the scheme and Mrs Harrison has asked Cllr Andrew Williams (Con, Bablake) to speak out on behalf of residents against the proposal. Speaking from her home in Duncroft Avenue she said;

 "We have asked Andrew to help us in our endeavour to stop this ludicrous scheme from taking place. This school would be too large for the area allocated and prove a danger to the whole district."

The Private school development would attract pupils from across the City and residents are worried that 400 vehicles arriving during rush hour would lead to parking hell. An alternative plan submitted by the school after last month's outcry has not allayed the fears of Cllr Andrew Williams who commented;

"Bablake School is a private school with pupils coming from far and wide so most pupils will travel by car.  This could cause an extra 400 cars to come to the area during the school run and I am not satisfied that the area can support this volume of traffic. It is unfair to ask local residents to put up with traffic mayhem when local children will not get any benefit from a new private school. Now that a planning application has actually been received by the Council we shall be opposing it on behalf of the residents."

 Coventry North West Parliamentary Candidate and Sherbourne Ward councillor Gary Ridley said;

"Because the school's consultation exercise was very limited we undertook a massive leaflet delivery to make residents aware of the planning application and people are not happy. Residents are concerned that the site is not big enough to support this development and they are afraid that it will lead to traffic mayhem."

  A date has yet to be set for the application to be considered by the Planning Committee.
