Gary Ridley has been re-elected to Coventry City Council with an increased majority , now 423. Across Coventry thousands of people voted to return the Conservatives to power in the City who now control the Council on the casting vote of the Lord Mayor.
It was another bad night for Labour in Coventry North West overall, if the results repeated themselves at a general election the seat would be a Conservative gain.
Speaking on the result Cllr Ridley said;
"I would like to thank everyone who has supported me over these last few years and I am honored that people felt strongly enough to come out and vote for me and to increase my majority. We have seen lower council tax rises, the weekly refuse collection kept and a more hopeful atmosphere under the Conservative controlled Council and I am delighted that we have been given the chance to carry on with that good work."
Gary Ridley has welcomed a report to Cabinet Member Tim Sawdon calling for the scrapping of plans to build a play area on the site of Lake View Park.
Local residents had submitted a petition to Gary bearing 295 signatures against the construction of a play area on the park and further emphasised their opposition at the Sherbourne ward forum where 59 residents to 1 voted against the plans.
Local people had concerns that a play area would significantly alter the natural and quiet feel of the park and may have become a magnet for increased anti-social behaviour, there have been several high profile incidents this year including a stabbing. One of the most pressing concerns for residents was that the site was susceptible to flooding and that the safety of children playing nearby could not be guaranteed.
